How Hard Should You Really Work Out? Why More Isn’t Always Better
Training hard enough to make progress doesn't mean making every workout exhausting. Here's how to find an appropriate level of effort for your goals, fitness level, and ability to recover.
“Work harder” may be one of the most common pieces of advice in fitness.
But how hard?
Exercise intensity exists on a spectrum. Too little challenge may provide an insufficient stimulus for improvement. Too much, too frequently, can generate unnecessary fatigue, compromise subsequent training, and make a program difficult to sustain.
The useful question isn't simply whether a workout feels hard.
It's whether the intensity is appropriate for what you're trying to accomplish.
What Does Training Intensity Actually Mean?
Intensity can mean different things depending on the type of exercise.
In resistance training, intensity technically often refers to the load being lifted relative to your maximum strength—for example, a percentage of your one-repetition maximum. In everyday coaching, however, people also use “intensity” to describe how difficult a set or workout feels.
During aerobic exercise, intensity may be estimated using heart rate, pace, power output, breathing, or perceived exertion.
You don't necessarily need sophisticated equipment to use these concepts effectively. Learning to recognize your own effort can be surprisingly useful.
Use Perceived Effort
One practical tool is the rating of perceived exertion, or RPE.
A simple 1-to-10 scale can help:
RPE 1: Rest/No exertion.
RPE 2–3: Very easy effort; comfortable for an extended period.
RPE 4–5: Easy to moderate; purposeful but comfortable.
RPE 6–7: Moderately hard; clearly working, but effort remains controlled.
RPE 8–9: Hard to very hard; substantial effort with limited capacity remaining.
RPE 10: Maximal or near-maximal effort.
These numbers aren't laboratory measurements. They are a way of translating how your body feels into something you can monitor and compare.
Importantly, not every workout needs to reach 9 or 10.
A well-designed training week may intentionally contain different levels of effort.
For Strength Training, Think About Repetitions in Reserve
Resistance training offers another useful concept: repetitions in reserve, commonly abbreviated RIR.
Imagine finishing a set of an exercise and asking:
With good technique, how many more repetitions could I realistically have completed?
If the answer is two, you had approximately 2 RIR.
This gives you a practical way to judge proximity to muscular failure without having to reach failure on every set.
For many people and many exercises, productive resistance training can be performed while leaving a small number of repetitions in reserve. Sets performed closer to failure can certainly have a place—particularly when muscle growth is a goal—but repeatedly taking every exercise to failure isn't required for progress. The American College of Sports Medicine's 2026 resistance-training Position Stand found that training to momentary muscular failure did not consistently improve outcomes in healthy adults.
The appropriate approach depends on the exercise, training experience, goals, total training volume, and ability to recover.
Cardiovascular Training Doesn't Need to Be All-Out Either
Cardiovascular exercise presents a similar temptation: if faster is good, faster must be better.
But different intensities produce different training effects.
Lower- and moderate-intensity exercise can build aerobic capacity while imposing relatively manageable fatigue. Higher-intensity intervals can provide a potent cardiovascular stimulus but generally require greater recovery.
A practical indicator is the talk test, a simple method also used in physical-activity guidance from organizations including the CDC and American College of Sports Medicine.
At a moderate aerobic intensity, you can generally speak in sentences, although you may be breathing more heavily than at rest. At vigorous intensities, speaking becomes increasingly difficult.
A balanced program can include both easier and harder cardiovascular sessions rather than turning every workout into a test of endurance.
Perceived effort, breathing, and the talk test can help gauge cardiovascular intensity without relying on all-out effort.
How Hard Should Most Workouts Feel?
There is no single intensity that is right for everyone.
Your appropriate training effort depends on several factors: your goals, experience, health, training frequency, exercise selection, current conditioning, sleep, stress, and recovery.
But there is a useful general principle:
Most training should be hard enough to create a meaningful stimulus without routinely compromising your ability to recover for the next session.
That may mean applying the same "something left in the tank" idea from resistance training—finishing a run feeling pleasantly worked rather than depleted.
The goal isn't to leave the gym wondering whether you survived the workout.
It's to accumulate productive training over time.
When Should You Push Harder?
Harder efforts have a legitimate place.
As fitness improves, the body needs progressive challenge if it is going to continue adapting. Depending on the goal, that might involve gradually increasing resistance, repetitions, training volume, pace, duration, or other variables.
Occasionally training close to your limits can also provide useful information about performance.
But progressive overload and maximal effort are not the same thing.
Progression can be gradual. A little more weight, another quality repetition, improved technique, a slightly faster pace, or completing the same workload with less perceived effort can all represent progress.
Signs You May Be Doing Too Much
One difficult workout isn't necessarily a problem. The more useful question is how you're responding across days and weeks.
Pay attention when unusually poor performance, persistent fatigue, prolonged soreness, declining motivation, disturbed sleep, or difficulty recovering repeatedly accompanies your training.
None of those signs alone proves that exercise intensity is the cause. Sleep, nutrition, psychological stress, illness, medications, and other factors can also affect recovery and performance.
But when several occur together and persist, your training load deserves another look.
Sometimes the productive adjustment isn't to stop training. It is simply to reduce the load, volume, frequency, or intensity temporarily.
Judge the Program, Not the Workout
Individual workouts matter, but adaptations accumulate across repeated sessions.
That means the best measure of training intensity is not how dramatic today's workout felt.
Look instead at the trend.
Are you getting stronger?
Is your endurance improving?
Can you perform more work at the same perceived effort?
Is your movement quality improving?
Are you recovering well enough to maintain your training schedule?
If so, the program is probably doing something useful—even if every workout doesn't leave you exhausted.

Some workouts should challenge you substantially. Others should feel controlled. Easier sessions can support recovery and contribute to fitness without leaving you depleted.
The objective is to apply enough stress to encourage adaptation while managing fatigue well enough to continue training consistently.
Don't ask whether you could have made today's workout harder. Ask whether making it harder would have made your training better.
That's a much more useful distinction.
