Queen of the South’ Star Hemky Madera on Reinventing His Fitness, Mental Discipline, and Longevity
“I gave myself 52 weeks to get into the best shape possible — not just physically, but mentally too.”

The award-winning actor opens up about consistency, recovery, family life, and the mindset behind his latest fitness transformation.
For years, audiences have known Hemky Madera as the intense and unforgettable Pote Galvez from Queen of the South — a role that helped cement his reputation as one of television’s most compelling character actors. With standout appearances across projects like Weeds, Perry Mason, The Lincoln Lawyer, and the expanding Star Wars universe through The Mandalorian and Grogu, Madera has quietly built a career defined by versatility, longevity, and resilience.
But away from the cameras, the actor recently committed to a very different kind of transformation.
As he approached 49, Madera made a decision that had nothing to do with chasing Hollywood standards — and everything to do with building a stronger future physically, mentally, and emotionally.
“Turning 49 really woke me up,” Madera tells OnFitness Magazine. “I gave myself 52 weeks to get into the best shape possible — not just physically, but mentally too. At this stage, I want to feel strong, sharp, and ready for whatever comes next.”
That mindset shift changed everything.
How Hemky Madera Changed His Approach to Fitness
Like many actors early in their careers, Madera admits fitness once revolved more around aesthetics and image. Today, his priorities are entirely different.
“Earlier in my career, it was more about looking a certain way,” he explains. “Now it’s about performance, longevity, energy, and being able to show up fully on set, at home, and in life.”
That evolution reflects a larger shift happening across modern fitness culture. More people — especially as they move into their 40s and beyond — are beginning to prioritize mobility, recovery, energy, and mental health over unrealistic perfection.
For Madera, “being in shape” no longer means chasing vanity metrics.
“It means feeling capable,” he says. “Having energy, moving well, recovering better, and feeling confident in my body. It’s less about vanity and more about strength and consistency.”
“I’m not chasing perfection. I’m chasing consistency.”
Hemky Madera’s Fitness Habits for Longevity and Energy
In Hollywood, longevity is rare. Sustaining a career across decades requires far more than talent alone.
Madera says physical discipline has become essential to staying competitive in an industry filled with long production days, emotional demands, travel, and constant pressure.
“This business demands stamina,” he says. “Long days, emotional work, travel, pressure — your body has to support your mind and your craft.”
Rather than chasing shortcuts or extreme programs, Madera focuses on consistency and foundational habits: strength training, walking daily, eating cleaner, prioritizing protein, hydration, and sleep — habits that are simple in theory, yet difficult to sustain in practice.
“Nothing crazy,” he says. “Just showing up every day and making better choices.”
That philosophy may be the most relatable part of his entire transformation.
Why Fitness Became Part of Hemky Madera’s Mental Health Routine
For Madera, training is no longer just physical preparation — it has become part of his mental health routine.
“Training clears my head,” he says. “It gives me structure, confidence, and a sense of control. It’s as much for my mind as it is for my body.”
He also credits curiosity, creativity, and discipline for helping him stay mentally sharp between acting roles.
Burnout, he says, is managed by reconnecting with the parts of life that keep him grounded.
“I try to stay connected to the things that ground me: family, training, music, and quiet time,” he explains. “You have to refill yourself, especially in a business that constantly asks you to give.”

How Hemky Madera Balances Fitness, Recovery, and Family Life
Away from work, Madera’s ideal day sounds refreshingly simple.
“A workout, time with my family, maybe some good food, and a quiet evening,” he says with a laugh. “Which sometimes is hard with two kids, four dogs, and two cats. Simple things. That’s the good stuff.”
That grounded perspective seems to fuel the consistency he now values most.
Asked what fitness habit he wishes he had started earlier, Madera doesn’t hesitate:
“Strength training with real consistency — and taking nutrition more seriously. Those two things change everything.”
And perhaps the biggest surprise?
“Probably how disciplined I’ve become,” he says. “I’m not chasing perfection. I’m chasing consistency. And I’m enjoying the process more than I expected.”
For Madera, the goal is no longer perfection.
It’s consistency, discipline, and building a life that feels strong both on and off screen.
