Should You Use a Fat Burner for Faster Weight Loss?

When you finally decide you can’t stand the “spillage” over your waistband or going shopping again for the next size up, it’s time to start strategizing your fat-loss game plan. You may have wondered whether supplements labeled “Fat Burners” are worth your while even if they really work for weight loss.

As someone who has used fat-burners on and off for decades, I can definitely provide information and insights from my experience to help you decide whether or not to give them a go. But, before trying a fat-burner, you should have an idea of what you can and can’t expect them to do.

You may have heard the adage, “you can’t out-exercise a bad diet.” By the same token, you also can’t expect fat-burners to undo the damage of bad eating habits or a sedentary lifestyle. But with a solid diet and exercise routine, they really can pack that extra punch for faster results.

Fat burners are not made of magic fairy dust that can just make your fat go “poof.” They work by creating a metabolic process called thermogenesis which causes your body to burn calories and produce heat. This is especially helpful if you’re on a low-calorie diet which will eventually slow down your metabolism.

As I’ve mentioned, I’ve used many of these products in the past. Some were not effective at all while others were downright dangerous!

The product I’ve been using for the last several years is BURN™ from ProMera Sports. The product is designed to have a simple and straightforward ingredient list featuring natural compounds that have been shown in studies to promote an increased metabolism and control appetite. Additionally, another great feature is that BURN is made without any artificial flavors, sweeteners, or colors/dyes. And it tastes amazing!

Let’s take a look at these ingredients in BURN™ and break down their function and benefits to understand their role in boosting your metabolism.

  • 1. Capsimax®. This ingredient is a form of capsaicin, the main active ingredient in chili pepper and other peppers.

Capsaicin increases activity in the sympathetic nervous system (SNS). An increase in SNS activity generally stimulates thermogenesis, energy expenditure, and fat oxidation while decreasing appetite.

Capsaicin, caffeine, and various teas like green tea have long been thought to aid in weight loss and prevent obesity.

Some studies have found these thermogenic compounds may increase energy expenditure by as much as 4-5% and fat oxidation by as much as 10-16%. This can mean burning an extra 70 – 95 calories a day, which can add up. One particular study noticed fat mass was 6.68 % lower in subjects to took 4mg of capsaicin a day for 12 weeks compared to those given a placebo.

  • 2. PurTea® (organic green tea extract). You may have heard how beneficial green tea can be for health. It is thought to protect the brain, heart, reduce the risk of certain cancers and help you lose weight. The extract of green tea contains large amounts of a catechin called EGCG, a potent antioxidant which helps prevent cellular damage. It may also offer a slight decrease in muscle soreness.

Several studies have found green tea extract may help boost metabolism and fat oxidation (calories burned from fatty acids rather than glucose). The fat burning effects appear to work best in combination with caffeine. However, if you are already a major java junkie (caffeine tolerant), green tea extract may not be as effective. You’re more likely to experience the effect when you’ve given your body a little break from caffeine.

  • 3. PurCaf® (organic green coffee bean caffeine). Caffeine is the most common ingredient in fat burners, and for a good reason. Caffeine stimulates the central nervous system (CNS). When the CNS is stimulated, it sends a signal to fat cells telling them to break down into fatty acids to be used as fuel during exercise.

Another way caffeine helps you burn fat is that it can help increase your power output during bursts of exercise such as weight lifting or sprinting and also endurance activities, like cycling and running. The effect is that you can work harder while feeling less fatigued… meaning, you burn more calories during your workout.

Therefore, caffeinated fat burners are particularly helpful when you find it difficult to muster up the energy to do a vigorous workout or a long bout of cardio.

Caffeine may also help with appetite suppression. Some studies found people were less hungry for a few hours after consuming caffeine. I’m definitely one of those people. Be mindful, however. Eventually, the effect will wear off, so be careful not overeat when it does.

Note: it is possible to build up a tolerance to caffeine.

  • 4. L-carnitine. L-carnitine is a naturally occurring amino acid (the building blocks of protein). Additionally, L-carnitine helps move fatty acids into the cells’ mitochondria to be burned for energy. The L-carnitine HCL works synergistically with the other thermogenic ingredients in BURN for maximum benefits. For some people who are deficient in this amino acid, it may be especially beneficial for fat loss. This includes those who are strict vegetarian or vegan as well as seniors.

BURN can be stacked with other sports supplements like CON-CRET® Creatine.

Tips for trying Fat-Burners:

  • a. If you’re new to taking any sort of stimulant, start with small doses to see how you tolerate them.

  • b. Some people metabolize caffeine, stimulants, and other substances slower than others. Try not to take any stimulants late in the day.

  • c. If you’re taking any prescriptions, check with your doctor or pharmacist to see if there could be any negative interactions. Even certain over the counter supplements might not mix well with fat burners, so it’s always a good idea to do some extra research.

  • d. Most fat burners work best if you are not already consuming caffeine. For better results, try giving your body a break from caffeine or other fat burners for a few weeks, then resume again. Your body will build up a tolerance meaning you may need to increase the caffeine dosage over time.

  • e. Fat-burners will work best when used before a workout. Take a dose approximately 30 minutes before you exercise.
